Coffee Talk

I met my friend Lisa for coffee this morning. We went to Julia's Coffee and Used Books, which is attached to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore on Wendover Road, just across from Home Depot. If you have not been to Julia's Coffee yet, I encourage you to check it out. Great (organic, fair trade) coffee and food (muffins, sandwiches, etc.) and a laid-back atmosphere (2 levels, too). All proceeds support Habitat for Humanity Charlotte.

Julia's Coffee is named for Julia Maulden, a public servant extraordinaire. According to the website, she helped build a Girl Scout Camp in Kannapolis, sat on the CMS school board from 1966-1974, served in the Peace Corps at the age of 60, and started the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity, serving as the first (volunteer) executive director. She was Woman of the Year in Kannapolis in 1945, and then Woman of the Year in Charlotte in 1973. Phew! I should say she deserves a coffee place named after her!

After enjoying your coffee, be sure to browse through the extensive selection of used books. They are very well-organized and there was a great selection. I picked up a hardback for $5. Most paperbacks are $3. Remember to donate your own books when you are cleaning out your stacks. You get a tax receipt and can pass along a great book to another interested person (why, though, is my copy of Nightingales--about Florence Nightingales family--still sitting on the shelf? It was a good book!).

PS If you think it is too far to go--it took me less than 10 minutes to get there from my house, and I shopped at the Cotswold HT afterwards.
